Unfortunately, because Pitbulls have an undeserved bad reputation, some states have passed laws against them. Known as “breed specific legislation,” (BSL) it can lead to some pretty ugly things. Arizona is the 22nd state in the nation to put a stop to this arcane practice.

And here at Animals Being Cute, we’re pretty darn excited about it.

BAD REPUTATION

As animal lovers, most of us realize that the misinformation out there about Pitbulls is a pack of lies. Currently, however, many states have laws in place that ban people from owning Pitbulls.

Sadly, those laws also mean that Pitbulls in those shelters have zero chance of adoption. Often, in areas with breed-specific legislation, dog catchers euthanize Pitbulls instantly.

ARIZONA

Recently, in Arizona, governor Doug Ducey signed Senate Bill 1248 into law. The law takes effect in August and prevents Arizona cities and towns from enacting or enforcing breed-specific legislation.

Now, laws like this don’t just get passed. Instead, groups like the ASPCA, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Bar Association, and the American Kennel Club condemn these laws.

Groups like those found BSL to be both ineffective and expensive to enforce.

THE DOWNSIDE

Of course, all good things usually have a downside, and this law in Arizona is no different. While it’s great that the new law forbids BSL — it also made it easier for puppy mills to operate.

Previously, Tempe, Pheonix, and Tucson had laws in place that prohibited pet stores from selling commercially bred dogs and cats. Sadly, the new law did away with that protection.

THE GOOD WITH THE BAD

At first, the Humane Society of the United States opposed the bill because of the puppy mill legislation. However, legislators placed additional protections in the law — pet stores must provide the breeder’s name with extreme penalties to stores caught selling dogs from unlicensed breeders.

So, because of the BSL restrictions as well as the additional protections, the bill passed with flying colors.

To push back against the downside to the bill, the local humane societies have a plan. Together with other groups in the community, volunteers will raise awareness about puppy mills.

It’s essential that everyone understand that they should adopt a pet instead of purchase one.

HOW TO HELP

And this time, doggy advocates can use your help. All you have to do is share articles like this one with your friends. We implore you to speak up and encourage people to adopt instead of shop for a dog every chance you get.

Additionally, don’t forget about the Pitbulls. While Arizona is the latest in a growing number of states to prevent BSL — we still have a ways to go.

Things are getting better for dogs in this country, and it’s up to us to keep it going. Share this with your friends to help raise awareness about these critical issues.
