Sometimes when cruel things that humans do to animals seem overwhelming, it helps to remember the heroes out there.  There are people who come to the rescue of innocent animals.  They not only save their lives but change their lives for the better.

That’s exactly what happened when a cat was thrown onto the freeway and was dodging traffic and clinging to the edge of the bridge. One teenage boy not only saved him but gave the cat a new and loving forever home.

Gavin Orlowski was in a car with his mom, Erin Brown driving over the Grand River in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The two of them then saw a cat being thrown out of the window from the van in front of them.  Gavin recalls the moment, “I hear my mom…she’s driving and I’m in the passenger seat and she’s like (gasp).  There’s a cat being thrown out a window, running all around the street because the van in front of us just threw it out.”

The cat was on the bridge darting in and out of traffic trying to avoid being hit.  “I was just thinking like I need to get this cat,” the 14-year-old Gavin said.

Erin stopped their car and stopped traffic while the cat made it’s way over to the edge of the bridge.  “I turned back and held up my hand,” Gavin said. “The cat is like hanging off the over-bridge, like 75-percent of his body is like over the bridge.”

The mother and son duo took the cat to the BluePearl Animal Hospital.  “Turns out nothing was really wrong with it except all of his nails got cut off because of him trying to grasp the asphalt on the road and his back hurt from the fall,” Gavin reports.

Another Hero Comes Forward

Another hero then emerged when the story was posted on Facebook.  Someone saw the post and offered to pay the vet bill in full.

And as for the cat, he now has a forever home with Gavin and Erin along with a new name. “I thought of the name ‘Lucky’ because it is lucky to not be hit by a car on the highway,” Gavin said.

“We saw how attached Gavin was to this cat and the instant bond,” Erin reinforced. “Little Lucky here became a very lucky kitty.”
