One Arizona man was in for a huge surprise when he found the most unusual creatures on his roof. Reddit user littlebill246 of Tuscon, Arizona had lived at his home for 2 years before finding bobcats on his roof. A mother bobcat not only visited his roof but took up residence there.
The homeowner is assuming that the mom gave birth to her family up there on his roof. The bobcat family made a shelter in the cavers of his roofing. This may have been a once in a lifetime occurrence, but surprisingly it wasn’t. The next year, another bobcat raised a litter on his rooftop. The second year though, the mother was much smaller. He thought it may have been one of the grown kittens that were following in her mother’s footsteps.
But why would a mother bobcat pick a roof to raise her kittens? The homeowner thinks he knows why. He shared the following information on Reddit: “The little space under the roof on the right is actually where she gave birth and the kittens like to sleep, it’s a pretty decent shelter,” he wrote.
It’s tempting to want to help the Bobcat family, but the man explains why he made minimal disturbance to them.
“I don’t want to do anything more than just put up a camera. Because I’ve seen a few people suggest building a dog house or something, but they are wild animals and need to be treated as such and can’t get used to humans.”
He went on to say,
“Literally last week in another part of town, some guy decided to pick up one of the kittens in his yard and ended up getting stitches. So as much as they are adorable, they are still wild and dangerous!”
Bobcats are solitary creatures. They generally roam an area 1 to 18 square miles in size. They scratch on trees to mark their territory. Females can be especially aggressive to other females in their territory. Normally, females make a “natal” den in a rocky cave-type of dwelling.
